emo band :The 4 different phases of emo band

Posted by | Posted in Emo band | Posted on 20-02-2010

Tagged Under :

1) Phase one- The ‘emocore’ started in mid 80’s and has been going strong since then. In the beginning emo bands mostly consisted of punk bands which gave emo music a definition of heavy drumbeats accompanied by distorted guitar work. The bands in this phase produced high-tempo music and at times the lyrics and vocals were not clear but provided a powerful foot-thumping bass effect.

2) Phase two- This phase was started in late 80’s. The most distinguished feature of this phase was the guitar work. The bands of this phase produced some amazing guitar work which transformed suddenly from high pitch to low pitch. However the vocal style became more intense and clear in this phase of the emo bands. But the punk lyrics were replaced by abstract poetry.

3) Phase three- This emo bands phase produced even a more hardcore version, making use of synthesizers and computers to generate extra bass and the singing style was very fast. At times catching the wordings were a ordeal in itself.

4) Phase four- Phase four was started in early 90’s and is still existent. This phase saw new Pop and Indic bands incorporating emo music and beats and provided all-new fusion of two entirely different styles of music. However the lyrics were very emotional and sentimental.

Here are some of the popular 21st century emo bands:

Tokyo Hotel

Hidden in Plain View

Rites of Spring

The Rocket Summer

City of Caterpillar

Tomorrow’s Last Hero

Although emo bands have gone under a lot of transformation but the traditional emo bands of 80’s are still the most appreciated and listened to.

emo Subculture :7 things to know more about

Posted by | Posted in Emo | Posted on 20-02-2010

  1. Emo, is a term which is given to the subculture of hardcore punk and pop, which originated from the Washington DC area, but which later spread like wildfire to the rest of the US and also to other parts of the world. Emo has since evolved into a musical and fashion experience which is embraced by quite a number of young adherents.
  2. The word “Emo” actually originated from the term “emocore” which refers to the hardcore punk music scene which started in the mid-1980s. The term is a variation of the word “emotive hardcore”, which is what the bands
  3.  in the DC area sounded like. They have developed a unique punk-rock style of music, which blended the characteristics of the electric guitar with smooth sounded mellow tracks, which are typically screamed from the top of the lungs, hence the term emotive hardcore. Amongst the bands which pioneered this genre were groups such as One Last Wish, Embrace, Fire Party and Moss Icon.
  4. The Emo subculture is also heavily influenced by the Indie scene, with the likes of people such as Fugazi heading off the first wave of Emo, with bands which included Far and Texas Is The Reason, which pumped Indie music into the Emo subculture.
  5. The sound feels more like a chaotic blend of instruments laced with emotional singing which emanates deep inside the lungs. This attracts crowds of young people. Their chants and raves have become characteristic as far as Emo concerts are concerned. These concerts have in turn become some of the most vibrant in the entire rock industry.
  6. The Emo culture is not all about music however. There are fashion statements and stereotypes associated with the Emo subculture which spread to other facets of culture. Black is considered the color of choice in the Emo universe and it permeates almost all aspects of the Emo dress code. The hair is typically dyed jet-black, and in some instances it is spiked and can contain other colors as well. For the ladies, black nail polish is also widely used. In the Emo world, make-up is utilized by both males and females.
  7. There is now a wide range of products which cater to the needs of the Emo subculture. Cities such as Austin have fully embraced it and have great places which have an Emo theme such as restaurants, record stores and other joints. It is now common to even see special emo clothing lines, merchandise, toys and even TV programs and movies. Today, the Emo subculture has caught influences from both pop and rock and is beginning to be accepted as a lifestyle choice

halloween bat hoodieI love hoodies. They keep me warm and cozy, and I have no need for a hat that can spoil that special hairdo I worked so hard to create. What I don’t love is the extravagant price on the hoodies I so love.

Thanks to a tutorial on Craftster, I don’t have to spend a lot of money anymore on a hoodie. With pictures and complete step-by-step instructions, we all can make our own hoodie. If you have the skills to sew, making the hoodie should take a mere matter of minutes; after you get all the parts cut out, that is.

I think this hoodie project is an excellent way to catch up on making your Christmas gifts. Almost everyone I know likes hoodies, and you will end up with some happy gift recipients.

Ok i came across this tutorial  from craftster and thought its damn cool..and i have ever tried sewing an item of clothing and have some fun. Now i have changed the design as i like and sell them to many place nowadays

So the site says-
so to start things off. my veggietales hoodie. not really a flattering color or print but it’s super warm because i lined the entire hoodie, sleeves and all, with flannel.

54201VEGGIETALESFRONT med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich
54201VEGGIETALESSIDE med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

now onto the tutorial. please read this carefully before asking too many questions. I’ll try to be as clear as possible. I directed this tutorial towards someone who has sewn a piece of clothing before. Not going into detail about how to attach sleeves and such but it should be quite simple to figure out.

Materials: 2+ yards of main fabric, .5 yard lining (for hood), 20″ or longer separating zipper, .5 yard rib knit fabric, 1 tshirt, it would also be useful to have a hoodie next to you while you’re doing this just to make sure things look right.

Instructions:

1. Place the tshirt on top of the fabric. fold the sleeves in and cut out the shape adding about .75″ on both sides.
54201STEP1 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

2. Take the piece you just cut out and fold it in half. Lay it over the fabric and cut it out adding 1″ – 1.5″ to the straight edge. Repeat.
54201STEP2 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

3. Now fold the fabric and along the fold lay the tshirt sleeve down. Adding about .5″ to the bottom cut the shape out at whatever length you desire. Repeat.

54201STEP3 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich
4. Now you should have 5 pieces. 1 back. 2 front. 2 sleeves. If you don’t have this reread steps 1-3.
54201STEP4 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

5. Now we start to sew. Take the back piece and sew the front pieces to it. You should be sewing down the side and along the shoulders. If you were to put this on now it’d be like an ugly vest.
54201STEP5 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

6. Now cut out pockets. Your choice of the size and shape but mine look like this. I take some of the rib knit fabric and cover the edge.
54201STEP6 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

7. Now take your main piece and fold that extra fabric in.
54201STEP7 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

8. Once you’ve decided where the fold will be unfold and pin the pocket in place. Part of the pocket should overlap the fold. Sew it down.
54201STEP8 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

9. Now that you’ve sewn it down fold it over again and pin the folds in place.
54201STEP9 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

10. Now sew the bottom band on. The band should be slightly shorter than the whole bottom so you can stretch it a little as you sew. That will give the bottom a slightly snugger fit.
54201STEP10 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

11. Now pin the zipper on under the folds and try it on to make sure the zipper isn’t lumpy. Then sew it down. (If you have extra fabric at the neck fold it down like a v-neck)
54201STEP11 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

12. Now onto the sleeves! If you don’t have something relatively close to what was shown in the previous picture you might want to reread some steps before moving on. So take your sleeves and sew them so they look like sleeves. (hopefully it’s self explanatory)
54201STEP12 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

13. Once you’ve sewn up the sleeves you can sew them to the main piece. Make sure everything is going in the right direction before sewing. Multiple times I’ve ended up w/ inside out sleeves.
54201STEP13 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

14. Now sew some cuffs. Then sew them onto the bottom of the sleeve. Didn’t really show this but hopefully you can figure it out..
54201STEP14 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

15. Okay we’re almost done! Now we move onto the hood. READ THIS PART CAREFULLY I CAN BE A BIT CONFUSING. Look at the previous picture. See that line I drew around the neck.. Measure that. Divide that number in half. That number is the length of the bottom part of the hood. (bottom straight edge in the picture below) The shape of the hood is your choice. Now cut 2 of those out in your main fabric and 2 of those out in the lining. [i forgot to take pictures of the pieces]. Now with the right sides facing each other sew along the green line on the main fabric and the lining. You should have 2 seperate hoods now (one hood is main fabric, one is lining).
54201STEP15 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

16. Now with the right sides of the hoods facing each other, sew along the green line.
54201STEP16 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

17. Turn it right side out and you have your hood. This is the time to add a drawstring thingy if you want. That would be done by poking holes at the bottom and sticking a shoelace/ribbon through.
54201STEP17 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

18. Now sew the hood to the main piece. If you want you can cover this seam because it will be the most visible when you are wearing it.
54201STEP18 med Diy fashion : How to make your own hoodie tutorial!! and rich

19. YOU’RE DONE. Admire your work! or if you aren’t happy with what you made.. salvage the zipper, scrap the rest and start over!!

10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

Posted by | Posted in Punk | Posted on 13-02-2010

1 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever
#1 The Clash – s/t (1977) No other punk band was able to express powerful ideas as eloquently as the Clash. No other punk outfit was able to assimilate and utilize as relevant and fascinating a collection of influences. On their eponymous debut they take Junior Murvin’s superlative reggae hit “Police and Theives” and transform it into a punk classic. Their most popular tune, “Complete Control” was produced by Jamaican studio genius Lee “Scratch” Perry, and is one of the most brilliant recordings ever made. In their remarkable statement of purpose, “Clash City Rockers”, they tack on an ending paying tribute to stars of both reggae and glam, while incorporating “Bells of Rhmney”, a folk song about labor unrest in Welsh coal mines in the 1920’s! A punk band with lyrics to rival Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs – it seems incredible. When this album came out in 1977, CBS execs in the U.S. decided not to release it here because they thought it would be over the heads of American audiences. They may have been right, but they finally released an American version after the LP became the biggest selling import in history. If you’re in a record store look carefully and you’ll see that there are two similar looking versions of the CD with somewhat different lineups of songs, the American and British versions. Take your pick, either version is SP’s #1 punk album of all time! (Mel)

2 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#2 Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks (1977) The Pistols were the leaders of the pack that the 1976 UK punk scene revolved around. Their nihilistic antics garnered them more press than 50 other bands combined. They didn’t disappoint with “Anarchy In the UK”, a molotov cocktail of a debut single, with Johnny Rotten’s sneering vocal threatening, “I am an antichrist, I am an anarchist”. The Pistols took that hit record with them when they jumped (or were pushed) from EMI to Virgin, for inclusion on “Bollocks”, their only real studio album, although beaten to market by “Spunk”, their Dave Goodman produced demos. Two other seminal hits taken from Pistols singles, “Pretty Vacant” and “God Save the Queen”, helped make “Bollocks” the classic it is. “God Save the Queen” was a body blow to the spirit of the Silver Jubilee, the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. Although it became England’s best selling single, politics denied it the #1 chart position. However fine a personality Rotten was fronting the band, his superb vocals on “Bollocks” are his lasting achievement. The other element that made the Pistol’s sound so distinctive was Steve Jones guitar sound. It was piercing, and heavily reverbed, with snippets of metallish riffing, and massive overdubbing. Also overdubbed to dizzying heights were the vocal choruses. All the overdubs turned the Pistols from a three piece with a singer into a punk rock army with 10 singers and 10 guitars. By the time the album came out in late ‘77, it was the only way to hear the Sex Pistols, who were banned from performing in England. When the clock struck 1978 the Silver Jubilee was over and so were the Pistols, who self-destructed after a brief American tour in January. The Sex Pistols were one band who lived up to the hype and didn’t linger!

3 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#3 Misfits – Walk Among Us (1982) Take a look at eBay and see what this thing goes for if it’s an original pressing. It will give you an idea just how essential this is to both punk history and it’s influence on other bands, well after they had broken up, which is when most of their fame came. This New Jersey band’s album was released at a time when many thought punk was dead and gone, this record melded melodic hardcore with horror, love of the dead, decapitation, and plenty of other songs to create zombies by. Other bands that came out of the Misfits include Samhain and Danzig; Glenn eventually became the poster boy for muscle bound front men. Misfits also made the skull on a t-shirt something that was fashionable for someone who wasn’t a Deadhead.

4 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#4 Ramones – Leave Home (1977) The second band we talked about at our little meeting to put this list together, and we really got into it on just which (and how many) Ramones (and other band’s second best) albums to include. David and I won out on this, because it’s simply our favorite Ramones’ record. Sure, the first is incredible, sure it’s incredibly important, but I just like this one more. It’s got my favorite Ramones song on it, “Oh Oh I Love Her So”, along with other classics like “Glad To See You Go”, the achingly beautiful “I Remember You”, and a better mix between the simple 1-2-3-4 classic Ramones style that influenced so many bands and Beach Boys/Beatles style harmonies and melodies that the Ramones were born from.

5 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#5 Wire – Pink Flag (1977) In the age of the bloated prog rock opera with the 20-minute guitar solo, what could be more punk than minimalism and the 90-second song with the abrupt ending? This album set a new standard: say what you have to say, preferably taking as little time as possible to say it, and then move on. Even more so than the rest of the vintage waxings surrounding them, the songs here are stripped down to their essence and as focused as a laser beam, all the while never sacrificing inventiveness or sheer quality for brevity. Selected tracks: “Mr. Suit”, “It’s So Obvious”, “Ex-Lion Tamer”..oh fuck it, just play the whole thing already!

6 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#6 Damned – Damned Damned Damned (1977) In a scene where Malcolm McLaren, the Clash, and every band slinging guitars and sporting fashionable ripped clothing and safety pins was trying to get their record out and one-up the other guy, the Damned produced all the “firsts”. This was the first punk album released in the UK, the first album released by the legendary Stiff Records, and Damned were also the first to tour America. Produced by Nick Lowe, who rumor has it, sped up the original recording ever so slightly to make is sound more “punk”. This record is the only studio album that includes the full original line up. Less political than most of the most other UK punk bands at the time, the focus here was on sneering vocals, great guitars and monster hits (Well, maybe not hits, but they should have been!) like “New Rose” and “Neat Neat Neat”. They probably influenced as many bands as any punk band did at the time, and showed that you could just have fun playing songs you loved, and that the message didn’t have to be meaningful, which was somewhat of a rarity among the first British punk bands.

7 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#7 Jam – Setting Sons (1979) Originally conceived as a concept album about surviving a nuclear war, the idea was scrapped, but the emotional sentiment still comes through loud and clear. By 1979, many of the first wave of punk bands had already broken up, and the form was starting to expand musically. Paul Weller’s soul and reggae tastes were showing through (”Heatwave” is one great cover) in the songs. Jam had more traditional “British” influences (like the Beatles) than other bands, and even used (shriek!) keyboards, with song length often expanded from the “gotta be under 3 minutes” rule. There are classic tracks on this, like “Saturday’s Kids”, but it’s the depth of the songwriting that makes this LP shine. Desperation, desolation, but all done with a sense of melodic ear candy.

8 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#8 X-Ray Spex – Germfree Adolescents (1978) Even though this originally didn’t feature their demented cheer “Oh Bondage Up Yours” featuring their original sax player Laura Logic, (a situation rectified by the CD reissue) this still turned out to be a fine waxing indeed. The classic cover, featuring the band members trapped in test tubes, and song titles such as “The Day The World Turned Day-Glo”, “Identity”, “Art-I-fical” perfectly reflected lyrics directed towards the artificality and ultimate sterility of the consumerist society Poly Stryene and company found themselves immersed in, and the pigeonholes said society tries to force you to accept. The band made it very clear that they intended to be a round peg in a square hole, though instead of gray-faced diatribes they welded irony and wits as their weapons as effectively as scapels. Not to mention that this is also one of the very few times you’d hear a complimenting sax used so well in punk outside of any ska/jazz hybrids

9 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#9 Saints – I’m Stranded (1977) The Saints were from Australia, but sounded like they were from Detroit. They had a couple big pluses; Chris Bailey’s edgey voice and a fine collection of rockin’ melodic tunes. Much of the Saints tunes will remind you of “Raw Power” Iggy, with a faster tempo. Their slow one, the six minute long “Messin’ With The Kid” is one of this, or any album’s highlights, sounding like a garageband version of the Rolling Stones circa “Black and Blue”.

10 10 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time Ever

#10 Jawbreaker – Unfun (1990) How can anyone listen to a song like “Want” and not feel the longing in Blake’s voice? Blake’s voice churns from too many cigarettes and a whole lot of angst. This baby rocks from beginning to end, the playing is perfect. Chris and Adam made up probably the most formidable rhythm section in American punk. Jawbreaker’s debut was recorded in Los Angeles, home to two thirds of the trio, and was the perfect melding of hardcore emo and melodic pop punk. It powerfully demonstrated that you didn’t have to sacrifice strong melody to put across strong emotions and anger; and make the girls swoon, too.

7 ways to listen hardcore punk

Posted by | Posted in Hardcore punk | Posted on 13-02-2010

Tagged Under : ,

  1. Work your way into hardcore. If the lightest thing you’ve listened to is Michael Jackson, and you turn on Minor Threat record without easing in, you’ll be in for a nasty surprise and a nasty headache. Listen to something like Lagwagon, then Green Day, then NOFX, Bad Religion, then get into some hardcore bands. Another way is to take a modern rock band you like and listen to their hardcore influences (most rock bands today were influenced by hardcore). Do you like My Chemical Romance? Listen to The Misfits. Do you like Screeching Weasel? Listen to the Descendants. Do you like Rise Against? Listen to Black Flag. Look up the hardcore bands that influenced your favorite musicians today.
  2. Understand the history of hardcore punk. Read the book or watch the movie American Hardcore. Both are a very good look into what hardcore was all about.
  3. Choose some hardcore bands to listen to. Contrary to popular belief, there are many different types of hardcore. If you’re into horror movies, you should try The Misfits, who played a melodic style of music with horror movie themes lyrically. If you like controversial, outrageous, humorous songs, listen to the Dead Kennedys. They have many songs that protest things like Nazis, the government, and organized religion. There was a time during there career that they were considered “the world’s most dangerous rock band”. Look up some bands and decide which one would be right for you.
  4. Understand what hardcore is not. Many people get the incorrect assumption that hardcore kids were all troublemaking, drug using Nazis. While it is true that some did drugs and some were Neo-nazis, they are looked down upon by 90% of the hardcore scene and aren’t considered real punks. The Dead Kennedys even had a single called “Nazi Punks F#%k Off!”. There is a small form of hardcore called Straight Edge. Straight Edge kids swore off alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and casual sex. A good example of a Straight Edge band is Minor Threat, who deveolped the scean itself with there song “Straight Edge” Rise Against is also Straight Edge exept for the drummer.
  5. Know the look. While most music scenes have a lot of fashion in them, hardcore punk is a scene with an anti-fashion emphasis. Most Hardcore kids wear nothing more than a T-shirt and jeans. No flashy accessories, no weird hairstyles, just normal looking stuff. Straight Edge kids are known to have black X’s on the back of their hands to symbolize their abstinence to alcohol drugs and tobacco and casual Sex. For hair, just do what you want. Be yourself. That is what Hardcore is all about. Another important aspect of Hardcore “fashion” is DIY clothing. Don’t wanna pay $18 at Hot Topic for a Black Flag shirt? Buy a plain shirt for a fraction of the price and put the Black Flag logo on it yourself! It’s also fun to draw on your shirts and pants. There are exceptions to this, however. The Misfits were very theatrical.
  6. Get da hardcore music son! Go to a store and get some of the best of hardcore. There are many great artists. Refer to the Tips section of this article for a list of great Hardcore bands and some of their best albums.
  7. Most importantly, just be yourself! Don’t stop listening to artists you like now that you’re into hardcore. Be proud for your wide taste in music.

what is punk rock?

Posted by | Posted in Punk | Posted on 13-02-2010

Tagged Under :

Punk rock was the antithesis of all that was popular. It was fast, stripped-down, machine gun music that stormed in, shot up the place and left just as suddenly. The songs were usually brief and had confrontational, provoking lyrics. Punk rock took on the themes of establishment, politics, hopelessness and angst so common in the grunge music that would come along about 15 years later. But punk rock made it sound like these people wanted to change the world, not just whine about it.

In 1977, punk rock went nationwide in England, although it had already sneaked into the United States via The Ramones’ first album in 1975. Punk rock stayed rather in the background in the U.S. for several more years, whereas in Britain, it became almost mainstream. When The Clash released London Calling in 1979, they had enjoyed a couple of years of fame in Great Britain, and their Combat Rock album of 1982 with “Rock The Casbah” made it to the charts in the U.S.

Most punk bands didn’t go places, but the ones that did, such as the aforementioned three groups, had a huge impact on the music of their times. Disco died once punk rock really came into town. The stage was set for the New Wave bands of the early 1980s.

Looking under the punk rock 30 years down the road, a rock historian can see many musical trends in their infancy. The garage-band sounds of punk rock influenced grunge. The experimental side of punk influenced bands like Duran Duran to take some chances with instrumentation. Sisters doing it for themselves in punk roused a new wave of girl groups — even bands like Courtney Love’s Hole, or Babes in Toyland.

Some punk rock even sounds a little tame these days, considering the death metal and speed metal that have come after it. There were dozens of punk rock groups that realized only regional fame, but they changed the tastes of listeners who were tired of slick, sunny, over-produced pop. Once punk rock rolled in, it was impossible to ignore.
